The defamation trial which was won the most by Johnny Depp last week was an extraordinary piece of theatre.  The latest news is that Amber Heard says that there are no circumstances in which she can pay the 8.35 million dollars in damages.  Whilst the case centred around defamation given the very public figures that were involved it presented a much more sinister and sad portrayal of their marriage.

As matrimonial lawyers acting in a divorce or separation, we tend to focus on one side of the story. No one will ever really know what went on between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in the confines of their own home other than them, but what was interesting was the toxicity of the relationship that pushed them both to have  court hearings both in the UK and in America, which played out in minute detail the terrible aspects of their private lives.  It has all the makings of a future movie. It is a stark reminder that the power dynamic in a relationship can come from both sides and we must not be quick to judge or stereotype anyone.  Personality disorders exist in men and women.  Narcissism takes power to another level and causes a constant need for admiration, lack of empathy and a repetitive pattern of grandiosity.

We see many clients who are clearly in a toxic relationship.  It becomes so normal that it is only when they speak to us about the severe problems that they experience on a day-to-day basis, that they realise themselves that they have lost perspective on what is normal and how people should be treated.

We can help in circumstances of domestic violence or work to help clients get to a space which is calmer and better for them in the long run.

If any of these issues affect you and you wish to have a confidential discussion, please speak to our family solicitors in Lymington, New Forest, Hampshire for discreet and confidential advice.
