In the UK, boat registration requirements vary based on factors like the type of boat you own, how you use it, where you plan to sail and how you financed the purchase of it.

Do all boats have to be registered?

It is not compulsory for all UK owned vessels, as registration and regulatory requirements vary from vessel to vessel depending on their size, capacity, purpose and whether they have been financed, either in whole or part, by marine finance. As such, it is worth seeking advice from the relevant authority or a qualified professional as whether your vessel does need to be registered. It is compulsory for all vessels operating on inland waterways to be licenced with the Canal and River Trust.  It is also worth registering your vessel if you are intending on sailing out with UK territorial waters.

Do I need to register an inflatable boat?

Generally, small, non-motorised inflatable boats do not require registration unless they are used on inland waterways where a licence is needed.

Can a boat be registered in two names?

Yes, a boat can be registered in multiple names. Joint ownership can be registered with the UK Ship Register, specifying the proportion of ownership for each party.

Can you build your own boat and register it?

Yes, you can build your own boat and register it. You will need a builder’s certificate and to comply with UKCA marking standards, as well as ensuring the boat is built to the relevant code requirements.

Can you register a boat without a title?

It will be difficult to register a boat without title. Proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale, is typically required, and if you own a vessel that is longer than 14 feet, it must be titled if you want to register it.

How to register a boat without papers/paperwork?

If the title documentation to your boat has been lost or destroyed, you may find it difficult to register your vessel.  In the first instance you should compile any available documentation pertaining to the ownership of the vessel, following which you should seek advice from the ship register or from a qualified legal professional.

How can I check if my boat is registered?

Firstly, use the UK Ship Register’s online search tool. If you can’t find evidence that your boat is registered, contact the UK Ship Register directly and provide your boat’s details for verification.

If your vessel is based on the inland waterways, contact the Canal and River Trust to check whether the boat has been licenced.

Does a boat trailer need to be registered?
