Business 101: a guide to selling a small business
Getting your business ready to sell When considering selling your company, you need to start preparing your business to sell. It is worth investing time and effort into making sure your business is in a good position before going to market. This helps you with the valuation, but also to reduce the risk of issues arising later on in the process. Make sure you have the paperwork, accounts and contracts organised and up to date, and (ideally) any ongoing disputes have been resolved. Value your business The next step is to get your business valued. Your business is worth more than just its physical assets, you will need to take into account staff, intellectual property, contracts, revenue, liabilities, reputation and so on. Whether you are going to sell your business as an asset sale or as a share sale can … Continue reading

Silver separators: marriage and divorce second time around
Marriage rates for people aged 65 and over are steadily on the increase and have been since 2009. Statistics show that men tend to marry younger women and almost all of the brides and grooms aged 65 and over were divorcees, widows or widowers with only a small number getting married for the first time. This is likely to be because people are living longer and are more connected, both economically and socially, than they used to be. People are more likely to be working beyond 65 and can support themselves outside of marriage. They are becoming more adept at using social media in line with the younger generation. People marrying for the second time around in later life will want to protect their assets. They may still wish to leave their assets to their children and ring-fence property, savings, … Continue reading

Dementia Action Week
Dementia Action Week is an awareness campaign to stop the dismissal of dementia symptoms, such as memory loss, as being ‘just part of the ageing process’. This misconception results in fewer people taking these symptoms seriously and seeking timely help. Dementia is caused by a number of diseases that affect the brain, with the most common type being Alzheimer’s. The various types of dementia can affect the brain in different ways, making a diagnosis incredibly important as the progression of dementia can be unique to each individual. There is an estimated 850,000 people in the UK living with a form of dementia, with symptoms including; memory loss, confusion and changes in mood and vision. There is a misconception that the condition is only prevalent in those of an older age, however it can affect people of any age, with at least … Continue reading

No-fault divorce: a few weeks in
So here we are, only a short time after the launch of the new no-fault divorce system online. The gov.uk website has apparently experienced a surge in case numbers and that is likely to be because the system was not available entirely for a week prior to the new launch and people will have sensibly waited to proceed on the basis of not blaming each other for a divorce. The new divorce system is simple and administrative. However, research by The Marriage Foundation shows that divorce rates in the first 15 years of marriage have been falling across Europe and the UK is leading the way with a 27% reduction in divorce numbers between 1992 and 2017. Does this mean though that marriages are lasting and lasting longer? This is not necessarily the case; many people are just living together, … Continue reading
